Audit what you already own

Pull out everything you've worn in the past three months. Lay it on your bed. This pile is your starting point—not a failure. Notice patterns: Do you reach for the same five shirts? Which pants actually fit? Which colors appear repeatedly? These aren't accidents. Your body and habits are already telling you what works.

Take phone photos of pieces you wear regularly. You'll reference these later when shopping.

Define your color palette

Look at that audit pile. Pick the three neutral colors that dominate it. These are your anchors—likely some combination of black, navy, grey, olive, tan, or white. Once your baseline is solid, add one intentional piece each season that works with your anchors. Spring: a lightweight overshirt. Summer: linen shorts. Fall: a structured jacket. Each piece should earn its place by working with at least three baseline items.

How many pieces should a capsule actually have?

There's no magic number. A functional capsule for most men is 20–35 pieces total: 5–7 baseline items, 3–4 bottoms, 3–4 layering pieces, 2–3 outerwear items, and a few accent pieces. The goal is everything working together, not hitting a specific count.
