Fold and Store Basics Without Wrinkles

The difference between a closet that looks lived-in and one that looks intentional comes down to how you fold. We'll walk you through the methods that actually work.

Most men don't think about how they fold basics—they just cram them into a drawer and move on. But the way you fold a t-shirt or polo directly affects how it looks when you wear it. Wrinkles set in fast, and once they do, you're either ironing or rewashing. Neither is ideal.

The good news: proper folding takes maybe 30 seconds per garment and eliminates 90% of your wrinkle problems. It's not complicated, but it does require a method. Here's how to do it right, so your basics stay sharp and ready to wear.

Fold with intention, not speed. A wrinkle-free basic is a basic you'll actually reach for.
01

Step one · 1 minute

Lay it flat and smooth

Place your t-shirt or polo on a clean, flat surface—a bed or table works best. Smooth out the front with your hands, working from the center outward to remove any wrinkles or bunching. Pay special attention to the shoulders and sleeves. This step prevents creases from setting in during folding.

Use a clean surface every time. Folding on a wrinkled blanket just transfers those wrinkles to your garment.

02

Step two · 2 minutes

Fold in the sleeves using the envelope method

Pinch the fabric at the shoulder seam on one side. Fold that sleeve inward at a 45-degree angle, creating a triangle. The sleeve should fold toward the center of the shirt, not across the front. Repeat on the other side. This method keeps shoulder creases minimal and maintains the shirt's natural shape.

If you're storing multiple shirts, use the envelope fold consistently. It stackscleanly and looks intentional in a drawer.

03

Step three · 1 minute

Fold the sides inward

Fold one vertical side of the shirt toward the center, creating a clean vertical line. Fold the other side to meet it. You should now have a rough rectangle. Make sure the edges are aligned and there are no loose fabric bunches. This creates a compact, stackable shape.

Fold slowly and deliberately. Rushing causes uneven folds that create new wrinkles.

04

Step four · 1 minute

Fold in half horizontally

Fold the shirt in half from top to bottom, bringing the hem up to meet the neckline. Smooth out any wrinkles as you fold. The result should be a compact rectangle that's easy to stack. This is your final fold.

For polos with buttons, fold carefully so the button placket doesn't crease. You may need to fold slightly differently to avoid pressure on the buttons.

05

Step five · 2 minutes

Store vertically or in stacks with dividers

Place folded basics in a drawer vertically (like files) or in neat stacks. If stacking, don't exceed five shirts per stack—weight causes creasing at the bottom. Use drawer dividers or small boxes to keep stacks separate and prevent them from toppling. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to prevent fading.

Vertical storage is ideal if your drawer is deep enough. It prevents the crushing weight of stacks and makes it easier to grab a shirt without disturbing others.

06

Step six · 1 minute

Rotate and refresh weekly

Once a week, gently shake out your stored basics and refold if needed. This prevents permanent creases from setting in and keeps the fabric relaxed. If you notice wrinkles, hang the shirt for a few hours before wearing. Fresh air and gravity do most of the work.

Don't store basics in plastic bags or airtight containers. They need air circulation to stay fresh and wrinkle-free.

How to know it works.

Your basics should look crisp and ready to wear straight from the drawer. There should be no deep creases, shoulder dimples, or wrinkles that require ironing. If you can grab a shirt and wear it immediately without touching it up, your folding and storage system is working.

Questions at the mirror.

My basics still wrinkle even after I fold them carefully. What's wrong?

Check your storage environment. High humidity and heat cause wrinkles to set faster. Also verify you're not stacking more than five shirts—weight is the enemy. If wrinkles persist, hang your basics for a few hours before wearing instead of storing them folded.

Should I fold basics or hang them?

It depends on your space. Hanging is ideal if you have closet room—it prevents all wrinkles. Folding works fine if you have drawer space and follow proper technique. Never hang basics on wire hangers; they create shoulder dimples. Use padded hangers if you choose to hang.

How often should I wash my basics to keep them fresh?

That depends on wear and activity level. Basics worn casually can go 2–3 wears before washing. After-workout basics need washing immediately. Proper storage keeps them fresher longer, so you can extend the time between washes without odor issues.

Is there a difference in folding for cotton versus synthetic blends?

Not significantly. The technique is the same, but synthetic blends wrinkle less naturally. Cotton basics may need slightly more careful handling and storage to prevent creasing. Both benefit from the envelope fold and vertical storage methods.
