Authenticating jewelry at home isn't about becoming a gemologist—it's about catching obvious red flags and gaining enough confidence to spot fakes before you buy. Whether you're browsing estate sales, inheriting family pieces, or shopping secondhand, these tests separate real from plated or synthetic.

The good news: you don't need expensive equipment. A magnet, a scale, a loupe, and basic chemistry will tell you more than you'd expect. The catch: these tests confirm *likelihood*, not absolute proof. When real money is involved, a professional appraisal is always the final word.

Real gold and silver behave predictably under pressure, heat, and magnetism. Fakes almost always slip up.

Check the hallmark and weight

Look inside the band or on the back for stamps like 925 (silver), 750 (18k gold), or 585 (14k gold). These marks indicate purity. Now weigh the piece on a kitchen or jewelry scale. Real precious metals feel heavier than you'd expect for their size—gold is especially dense. If a ring marked 18k feels suspiciously light, it's likely plated or hollow.

Hallmarks can be faked, so treat them as a starting point, not proof. Always cross-check with other tests.

Run the magnet test

Real gold and silver are non-magnetic. Hold a strong neodymium magnet near (not touching) the piece. If it's attracted to the magnet, it contains ferrous metals—a sign of plating or alloy mixing. Pure silver and gold should show zero attraction. This test works best on solid pieces; plated items will often fail because the base metal underneath is magnetic.

Use a neodymium magnet, not a weak refrigerator magnet. The stronger the magnet, the more reliable your result.

Test with vinegar for silver

Real silver tarnishes when exposed to sulfur compounds. Dip a cotton swab in white vinegar and rub a small, inconspicuous area of the piece. Real silver will darken or leave a black mark within seconds. If nothing happens, you're likely looking at plated silver or a different metal altogether. Rinse immediately after to avoid prolonged exposure.

Use a loupe to inspect any stones. Real diamonds and gemstones have natural inclusions, tiny imperfections, or color variations that make each one unique. Look for air bubbles (sign of glass), cloudiness (possible synthetic), or suspiciously uniform color. Real rubies and sapphires show color zoning; perfect uniformity suggests synthetic.

Tilt the stone under light. Real diamonds refract light in specific ways; fakes often show rainbow flashes or look overly sparkly.

Feel the temperature

Hold the piece against your cheek or upper lip for a few seconds, then release. Real metals (especially silver and gold) conduct heat and will feel cold to the touch initially. Fake metals, glass, and some synthetics warm up much faster or feel room-temperature immediately. This isn't foolproof, but combined with other tests, it's a useful sensory check.

This works best on solid pieces. Plated or hollow items may pass this test even if they're not authentic.

Know when to call a professional

If tests conflict, if the piece is valuable, or if you're uncertain, stop and get a professional appraisal. Jewelers have X-ray fluorescence (XRF) machines and acid tests that give definitive answers. The cost ($20–50) is worth it before spending hundreds on a piece. Never rely on a single test—especially if you're buying at auction or from a private seller.

Ask the appraiser for a written certificate. This protects your investment and proves authenticity if you ever resell.

How to know it works.

Real precious metals and gemstones pass multiple tests consistently. If your piece checks most boxes—correct hallmark, non-magnetic, appropriate weight, natural inclusions in stones—you're holding the real thing. Fakes usually fail at least two tests.

Are lab-created gemstones 'fake'?

Not exactly. Lab-created stones are chemically identical to mined stones but grown in a lab. They're real gemstones, just not natural. Disclosure matters—a lab diamond should cost less than a mined diamond of equal quality.

What's the difference between gold-plated and gold-filled?
