How to Prevent Necklaces from Tangling

A tangled necklace is a morning mood killer. These five storage strategies—from straws to jewelry boxes—eliminate the chaos and save you precious minutes.

The tangle is inevitable—until it isn't. Most necklaces knot because they're stored loosely in drawers, tangled in jewelry boxes, or draped haphazardly on hooks. The solution isn't complicated, but it does require a small shift in how you think about storage.

Whether you own three necklaces or thirty, these five methods work across price points and jewelry styles. Each one keeps chains separated, prevents clasp-to-chain friction, and takes less than two minutes to set up. Pick one method or combine several depending on your collection size and available space.

Separation is the only real cure for tangling. Everything else is just untangling theater.

What you'll need.

  • 01Drinking straws (plastic or paper)
  • 02Small hooks or adhesive hooks
  • 03Jewelry box with compartments or drawer dividers
  • 04Shallow drawer and soft cloth or jewelry roll
  • 05Necklace stand or jewelry display rack
  • 06Small rubber bands or hair clips
01

Step one · 1 minute

Use drinking straws as chain separators

Thread each necklace through a plastic or paper drinking straw, with the clasp hanging outside one end. The straw keeps the chain from folding onto itself and tangling with neighbors. For longer necklaces, use two straws end-to-end. This method works especially well for delicate chains and is nearly free if you already have straws at home.

Tape the clasp to the outside of the straw so it doesn't slip inside during storage.

02

Step two · 2 minutes

Hang necklaces on individual hooks or pegs

Mount a small hook, peg, or adhesive hook on a wall, inside a closet door, or on the side of a shelf. Hang one necklace per hook so each chain hangs freely without contact. This method keeps necklaces visible, accessible, and completely separated. It's ideal if you wear the same few necklaces regularly and want them within arm's reach.

Space hooks at least 3 inches apart to prevent chains from swinging into each other.

03

Step three · 2 minutes

Coil necklaces in small compartments

Use a jewelry box with individual compartments, a drawer divider, or small fabric pouches. Gently coil each necklace loosely (not tightly) and place it in its own section. The compartment walls prevent chains from sliding across each other. This method works well for larger collections and keeps necklaces protected from dust and light.

Lay the clasp flat in the center of the coil so it doesn't catch on the chain.

04

Step four · 1 minute

Store necklaces flat in a shallow drawer

Line a shallow drawer with a soft cloth or jewelry roll. Lay each necklace flat in a single layer, with clasps pointing in the same direction and chains not overlapping. This method maximizes visibility and minimizes tangling because there's no vertical stacking. It requires dedicated drawer space but is worth it for frequently worn pieces.

Use a jewelry roll with individual pockets if you have one—it adds an extra layer of separation.

05

Step five · 2 minutes

Use a necklace stand or display rack

A jewelry stand with multiple hooks or a tiered display rack keeps necklaces organized and visible. Each chain hangs independently, and you can see your full collection at a glance. This method doubles as décor if you have pieces worth displaying. It's especially useful if you rotate necklaces seasonally or by outfit.

Arrange necklaces by length or color for a more intentional look that also makes selection faster.

06

Step six · 1 minute

Secure clasps with small rubber bands or clips

If you're using any of the above methods, gently secure the clasp to the chain with a small rubber band or hair clip to prevent it from sliding and catching. This extra step is optional but highly effective for delicate or frequently tangled necklaces. It takes seconds and eliminates the most common tangle trigger.

Use clear or colored rubber bands that match your necklace so they're less visible.

How to know it works.

A successful storage system means you can grab any necklace in under 10 seconds without untangling. You should see no knots, no clasp-to-chain friction marks, and no twisted chains when you retrieve a piece.

Questions at the mirror.

What if I have very long necklaces that don't fit in small spaces?

Use two straws end-to-end, or coil the necklace more loosely in a larger compartment. Alternatively, hang long necklaces on individual hooks where they can extend fully without touching other pieces.

Do delicate chains need different storage than thicker ones?

Delicate chains benefit most from compartments or individual hooks to minimize movement. Thicker chains are more forgiving but still tangle if stored loosely. The straw method works beautifully for delicate pieces because it provides maximum support.

Should I remove necklaces before bed or exercise?

Yes. Removing jewelry before sleep and workouts prevents tangling caused by movement and pressure. Store it immediately using one of these methods rather than leaving it on a nightstand or gym bag.

Can I use this method for layering chains I wear together?

Absolutely. Keep layering chains together in one compartment or on one hook, but still separate them from other necklaces. This keeps your go-to combinations organized and ready to wear as a set.
