The perfect t-shirt isn't about a specific brand or price point—it's about proportions. A tee that fits well at the shoulders, chest, and length can transform how you look and feel. The good news: you already have the tools to assess fit. All you need is a mirror, your body, and this guide.

Whether you're petite, tall, broad-shouldered, or pear-shaped, there's a t-shirt cut designed for your frame. The trick is knowing what to look for when you're trying something on.

Shoulder seams are your north star—if they sit right, everything else falls into place.

Step one · 2 minutes

Check your shoulder seams

Put on the t-shirt and look in the mirror from the front and side. The seam where the sleeve meets the body should sit right at the edge of your shoulder bone, not drooping down your upper arm. If the seam falls more than an inch past your shoulder, the shirt is too big. If it pulls inward toward your neck, it's too small. This single measurement determines whether a tee looks intentional or sloppy.

Use your fingers to locate your shoulder bone—it's the bony point at the top of your arm. The seam should align with it.

Step two · 2 minutes

Assess the chest and torso

Button or pull the tee down and observe how it sits across your bust and ribs. You should be able to pinch about an inch of fabric on either side of your body—enough for movement and comfort, but not so much that you look shapeless. If you're pulling the fabric away from your body in handfuls, size down. If the fabric is pulling or creating visible tension lines, size up.

Move your arms in a circle while wearing the shirt. It should move with you without binding or billowing.

Measure sleeve length

Sleeves should end between your wrist bone and the base of your thumb when your arms hang naturally at your sides. Short sleeves should hit mid-bicep, not riding up toward your shoulder or extending past your elbow. Long sleeves that are too short look unfinished; too long and they swallow your hands, making you appear smaller.

If you have longer arms relative to your torso, look for brands that offer 'tall' or 'long' sizing options.

Check the hem length

The hem should hit at your hip bone or just below—roughly where your hand naturally falls when your arm is at rest. A tee that hits mid-thigh can work if you're tucking it or pairing it with fitted bottoms, but a hem that grazes your knee often reads as oversized rather than intentional. Conversely, a crop that sits too high on the ribs can look unbalanced on taller frames.

If you're between sizes, opt for the longer length. You can always crop or tuck; you can't add length.

Consider neckline and fabric weight

Crew necks suit most people and are the most versatile. V-necks elongate shorter necks and broader shoulders. Scoop necks work well on smaller frames. Heavier fabrics (cotton blends, jersey knits) hold their shape better than thin, flimsy cotton. A quality tee should feel substantial but not stiff, and maintain its shape after washing.

Thinner fabrics require more precise sizing because they cling to your body; heavier fabrics are more forgiving.

Try it on with your actual styling formula

Put on the tee with the bottoms and shoes you'll actually wear it with. A tee that fits perfectly on its own might look off when tucked into high-waisted jeans or paired with a blazer. Walk around, sit down, reach up. The fit should feel comfortable and look proportional to the rest of your outfit. If you find yourself constantly adjusting it, it's not the right fit.

Wear the undergarments you'd normally pair with the tee—this affects how it drapes across your chest.

How to know it works.

A perfectly fitting t-shirt should feel invisible—you forget you're wearing it. You're not tugging at the hem, adjusting the neckline, or worrying about how it looks. The seams sit right, the length is proportional, and you have enough room to move freely.

Questions at the mirror.

What if I'm between sizes?

Go up a size. It's easier to tailor a tee down (or tuck it) than to add fabric. Oversized can be intentional; too-tight never is.

My shoulders are broad. Do I need to size up?

Not necessarily. Broad shoulders often need a larger size in the chest, but that creates excess fabric elsewhere. Look for brands that offer size ranges or consider having a tailor adjust the side seams.

Should a t-shirt be fitted or loose?

It depends on your preference and body type, but the fit should be intentional. A fitted tee should skim your body without clinging; a loose tee should have structure, not look like you're wearing a pillowcase.

How do I know if a tee will shrink?

Check the fiber content and care label. 100% cotton shrinks more than cotton-blend fabrics. Washing in cold water and air-drying minimizes shrinkage. If you're buying online, read reviews for fit feedback.
