This guide walks you through five practical methods to condition shoes at home, plus the friction-prevention layer that keeps problem areas protected. You'll wear your new shoes sooner, and your heels will thank you.

Condition leather or suede with appropriate product

For leather shoes, apply a thin coat of leather conditioner or mink oil with a soft cloth, working it into creases and the heel counter where friction peaks. For suede or nubuck, use a suede-specific conditioner spray, holding the can 6 inches away and misting lightly. For synthetic materials, a general fabric conditioner works. Let the product absorb for 15 minutes before wearing. This step softens rigid material and reduces the initial stiffness that causes blisters.

Test any product on an inconspicuous area first, especially on light-colored suede.

Step two · 2 minutes

Wear thick socks during initial wear

Put on the thickest socks you own—wool hiking socks or thermal layers work best—and wear your shoes around the house for 30 minutes to an hour. The cushioning creates a buffer between your skin and the shoe's interior, reducing direct friction. Thick socks also help the shoe mold to your foot shape faster. This is your lowest-risk introduction to the shoe's fit and pressure points.

If you feel a hot spot developing, stop immediately and move to step three.

Target high-friction zones with blister prevention

Identify where your shoe pinches or rubs—usually the heel, toe box edge, or ball of foot. Apply a blister prevention product (moleskin, gel pads, or friction-blocking balm) directly to your skin in those spots before putting on the shoes. Moleskin is the cheapest option: cut a piece slightly larger than the problem area, peel the backing, and press firmly onto clean, dry skin. This creates a slippery barrier that prevents the shoe from grinding against your skin.

Reapply blister prevention after 3–4 hours of wear, or sooner if you feel friction returning.

Stretch rigid areas with a shoe stretcher or damp cloth method

For shoes that feel genuinely tight (not just stiff), use a two-pronged approach. Insert a shoe stretcher overnight to gently expand the width and length. Alternatively, dampen a cloth, stuff it inside the shoe, and let it sit for 2–3 hours—the moisture relaxes the material without damaging it. For spot stretching, place a damp cloth over the tight area and use a hair dryer on low heat, moving it constantly to avoid heat damage. This method works especially well on leather and canvas.

Never soak shoes or use high heat; you'll warp the structure and damage adhesives.

Increase wear time gradually over one week

Day one: 30 minutes indoors with thick socks. Day two: 1 hour indoors. Day three: 2 hours with short outdoor trips. By day five, you can wear them for a full day if no pain develops. This graduated approach lets the shoe conform to your foot while your skin adapts to any remaining friction. If you feel genuine pain (not just stiffness), revert to the previous day's duration and reapply blister prevention.

Keep your old shoes with you for the first week in case you need to swap out mid-day.

Maintain shoes after break-in

Once broken in, condition leather shoes every 3–6 months to keep the material supple and prevent future stiffness. Store shoes with shoe trees to maintain shape and prevent creasing that causes friction on re-wear. Clean the insoles and let shoes air dry completely between wears. This maintenance extends the shoe's life and ensures they stay comfortable long-term.

How to know it works.

What if I get a blister despite prevention?

Stop wearing the shoes immediately. Clean the blister, apply antibiotic ointment, and cover with a sterile bandage. Don't pop it. Once healed, resume break-in with extra blister prevention and reduced wear time. How long should break-in actually take?

Most shoes need 5–7 days of graduated wear to feel comfortable. Premium leather can take 2–3 weeks. If a shoe still causes pain after two weeks of consistent break-in, the fit is likely wrong, not the shoe. Proper fit matters more than conditioning.

Can I speed up break-in?
