Assess the sole attachment method

Examine how the sole connects to the upper. Welted construction (visible stitching around the perimeter) is the gold standard for longevity—it allows resoling and distributes stress evenly. Glued soles fail predictably around 18–24 months of regular wear; stitched-and-glued hybrids last longer. Cemented-only soles, whether on leather or synthetic, are the weakest link. This single factor often determines lifespan more than material choice.

Flip the shoe over and run your finger along the sole edge. If you see stitching, the maker invested in durability.

Leather shoes with tight, even stitching survive longer than loose-stitched ones. Count stitches per inch on the vamp seam—eight or more is solid.
