What down actually is and why it works
Down consists of the soft, fluffy clusters beneath a duck or goose's outer feathers. These clusters trap air in millions of tiny pockets, creating insulation with minimal weight. A coat filled with 700-fill-power down provides comparable warmth to one with 600-fill-power at lighter weight. Fill power measures the volume one ounce of down occupies; higher numbers mean better loft and insulation. Down is compressible, packable, and incredibly durable if kept dry.

A coat that just says 'insulated' or lists vague fiber percentages is hiding something. Compare coats using the same metrics: if one says 700-fill down and another says 600-fill, the first is warmer at lighter weight.
Don't trust marketing language like 'premium' or 'advanced.' Trust numbers: fill power, fiber percentage, insulation weight, and shell specifications. These are objective and comparable.
How to know you've chosen the right material
