Down vs. Synthetic Insulation: Which Jacket Actually Keeps You Warm

Down and synthetic insulation both work—but they excel in different conditions. Here's how to match the material to your climate, budget, and lifestyle.

The insulation inside your winter coat does one job: trap dead air to create a thermal barrier. Down accomplishes this with clusters of soft feathers; synthetic alternatives use engineered fibers. Both work. Neither is objectively 'better'—but one will suit your actual life far better than the other.

Before you buy, you need to know three things: how each material performs when wet, what you'll realistically spend, and whether you can tolerate ethical concerns. This guide cuts through marketing language and gives you the framework to choose.

Factor in dry cleaning costs for down (if you choose that route) versus occasional washing for synthetics. Multiply the jacket price by how many years you'll realistically wear it.

Check the fill power rating for down

If you're leaning down, look for fill power (measured in cubic inches per ounce). Higher numbers mean better insulation: 550 is entry-level, 700+ is premium, 900+ is expedition-grade. You don't need 900 for city winters. For most people, 650–750 balances warmth, weight, and cost. This number appears on the jacket tag or product description.

Fill power only matters for down. Synthetic jackets use weight (grams) and thickness instead.

Down requires care: avoid machine washing (use cold hand wash or dry clean), hang-dry only, and occasionally fluff to restore loft. Synthetic is wash-and-wear—machine wash cold, tumble dry low, done. If you're someone who throws jackets in the wash without reading labels, synthetic removes a friction point. If you're meticulous, down's longevity rewards that attention.

Many modern down jackets are now treated to be machine-washable. Check the care label before assuming traditional dry-clean-only rules.

Down comes from geese and ducks, raising valid animal welfare questions. Reputable brands source from facilities with third-party certification (Responsible Down Standard, Global Traceable Down Standard). Synthetic sidesteps this concern entirely but relies on petroleum-based materials. Neither option is ethically neutral. Decide what aligns with your values and research the brand's sourcing practices.

Make your choice and test the fit

You now have the data. Down for dry climates and long-term wear; synthetic for damp conditions and low-maintenance living. Try the jacket on with the layers you'll actually wear underneath. It should feel snug but not restrictive. You need room to move your arms freely and layer without bunching.

The best insulation is the one you'll actually wear. A slightly warmer jacket you avoid wearing is useless.

How to know you chose right

The correct choice reveals itself in January. You're warm without overheating indoors, the jacket packs small for travel, and you're not constantly adjusting or wishing you'd bought something else. You should feel confident wearing it in your actual climate.

Quality varies by brand. Cheap synthetic can feel stiff and crinkly. Premium synthetic (like PrimaLoft or Polartec) feels soft and moves naturally. You get what you pay for.

How do I know if my down jacket is actually down?

Check the label for fill power rating and percentage down vs. feather. Legitimate down will specify this. If the tag says only 'insulated' with no details, it's likely synthetic or a low-quality down blend.

Can I repair a down jacket if it leaks?

Yes. Small leaks can be patched with specialized down repair tape or fabric patches. Larger damage requires professional repair. Synthetic is easier to patch yourself with standard fabric glue.
