How to Read a Fiber Content Label

That tag on your coat sleeve holds real information about how your outerwear will perform. Here's how to translate fiber percentages and fiber names into decisions that matter.

The fiber content label is your outerwear's passport. It tells you what the jacket or coat is actually made from, in what proportions, and gives you clues about how it will age, whether it needs special care, and whether it's built to last through seasons or serve one winter. Most people glance at it and move on. That's a missed opportunity.

Learning to read this label takes less than a minute per garment, but the information shapes every decision you make about wearing, cleaning, and storing that piece. Here's what you need to know.

The order of fibers on a label matters more than you think—it's listed by weight percentage, highest to lowest.

Step one · 1 minute

Locate the fiber content label

Find the care label sewn into the interior of your outerwear—usually along a side seam, at the neck, or inside a pocket. The label will list fibers by name followed by percentages. The fibers are listed in descending order by weight, so the first fiber listed is the dominant material in your garment. This ordering is regulated, not optional.

If the label is faded or illegible, contact the retailer or brand directly with your purchase information. They can tell you the exact fiber blend.

Understand the dominant fiber

The first fiber listed is your garment's foundation. If it says 'Wool 60%,' wool is doing most of the work. Wool provides warmth, water resistance, and breathability. If it says 'Polyester 65%,' you're looking at a synthetic base that's often lighter, less breathable, and designed for durability over luxury. Nylon and polyester are common in technical outerwear. Cotton and linen are rare in outerwear because they absorb water rather than shed it.

A dominant fiber above 50% means that material's characteristics will define how your coat behaves. Below 50%, you're wearing a blend where multiple fibers share responsibility.

Read the secondary fibers

The second and third fibers listed are there for a reason. A wool coat with 'Wool 80%, Nylon 20%' uses nylon for reinforcement at stress points and to add durability. 'Polyester 70%, Spandex 5%' means that spandex is adding stretch and recovery. Secondary fibers often improve performance, add structure, or reduce cost. They're not filler—they're strategic. The smaller the percentage, the more specific its job.

Spandex or elastane in outerwear (usually 2–5%) signals stretch and recovery. It won't make a coat clingy, but it will make it move with you and hold its shape longer.

Check for lining and shell separately

Some labels list the shell and lining as separate entries. The outer layer might be 'Shell: Wool 100%' and the lining might be 'Lining: Polyester 100%.' This matters because the shell is what protects you from weather, while the lining affects comfort against your skin and how easily the coat slides on and off. A polyester lining is standard—it's slippery, durable, and easy to clean. A silk or cotton lining is more luxurious but requires more care.

If only one fiber blend is listed, it applies to the shell. Linings are often noted separately or listed after a slash.

Connect fiber content to care requirements

Fiber content directly determines how you'll care for this piece. Wool often requires dry cleaning or hand washing. Polyester and nylon can usually tolerate machine washing. Cashmere blends need gentler handling than pure wool. Silk linings demand careful attention. Before you buy, cross-reference the fiber label with the care label. If the care instructions feel like a burden, reconsider whether this coat fits your lifestyle.

Blends are often easier to care for than pure fibers. A 70% wool, 30% nylon coat is more forgiving than 100% wool, but still warmer than 100% synthetic.

Assess durability and longevity

High percentages of natural fibers (wool, cashmere, silk) often signal investment pieces built to last decades. High percentages of synthetics (polyester, nylon, acrylic) often signal technical performance or budget-friendly construction. Neither is inherently better—it depends on your needs. A 100% wool coat is a different commitment than a 100% polyester technical shell. Both are valid. The label just tells you which one you're buying.

Blends are the middle ground: they offer some natural fiber benefits with synthetic durability and easier care. A 60% wool, 40% polyester coat is a practical choice for most people.

How to know you've read it correctly

You've successfully decoded a fiber label when you can answer three questions: What's the main material? What's it blended with and why? What does that mean for how I'll wear and care for this coat? If you can answer all three, you're ready to make an informed decision about whether this outerwear belongs in your wardrobe.

What if the label says 'other fibers' or lists something I don't recognize?

Manufacturers sometimes use this catch-all for minor components under 5%. It's usually not significant to the garment's performance. If you're concerned, email the brand with a photo of the label and ask for clarification.

Does 'virgin' or 'pure' on a label mean something different from just the fiber name?

'Virgin' or 'pure' means the fiber hasn't been recycled. It's a quality marker, not a required label element. Recycled fibers are increasingly common and often perform just as well—it's a sustainability choice, not a durability issue.

What if two coats have the same fiber content but different prices?

Fiber content is only one factor. Construction quality, brand reputation, design, and where it's manufactured all affect price. Two 80% wool coats can perform very differently based on how the wool is processed and how the coat is sewn.

Is there a 'best' fiber blend for outerwear?

No. It depends on your climate, lifestyle, and priorities. A wool-dominant blend works for cold, dry winters. A synthetic blend works for wet climates or high-activity wear. The 'best' fiber is the one that matches how you'll actually use the coat.
