Washing your Gore-Tex jacket in regular detergent, for instance, leaves residue that clogs the membrane and kills breathability. The good news: proper care is straightforward and requires no special skills, just specific knowledge.

The key difference between technical and conventional fabrics is their layered construction and chemical coatings. These components need protection from harsh detergents, high heat, and aggressive agitation. Follow these steps to keep your investment performing like new.

Select the right detergent and wash settings

Use a technical or sports-specific detergent like Hex Performance Wash or Nikwax Tech Wash—these are formulated to clean without leaving residue. Avoid fabric softeners, bleach, and regular laundry detergent entirely. Set your machine to cold water, delicate or hand-wash cycle, and use half the recommended detergent amount. Zip all pockets and fasten all closures before loading.

If you don't have technical detergent on hand, unscented baby shampoo works in a pinch—it's gentle enough to preserve coatings.

Step three · 8 minutes

Rinse thoroughly to remove all soap residue

After the wash cycle completes, run an extra rinse cycle with cold water only—no detergent. This step is non-negotiable: leftover soap clogs the fabric's pores and reduces water repellency and breathability. If your machine has a rinse-hold option, use it. For heavily soiled jackets, run two additional rinses. You'll know you're done when the water runs completely clear.

Hand-rinsing under cold running water is the gold standard if you have time—it guarantees no soap residue remains.

This step is essential for maintaining performance; it takes minutes and costs $10–15.

Test the DWR by sprinkling water on the jacket—if it beads up, you're good. If it soaks in, it's time to retreat.

Store properly to prevent damage

Once fully dry, hang the jacket on a padded hanger in a cool, dry closet away from direct sunlight and heat vents. Avoid plastic dry-cleaning bags, which trap moisture and can degrade coatings over time. If storing long-term, use a breathable cotton garment bag. Keep the jacket away from sharp objects and rough surfaces that can snag or puncture the fabric.
