The Art of the Fold: How to Pack a Blazer Without the Creases

A blazer is the anchor of any travel wardrobe, but it is notoriously temperamental when confined to a suitcase. Learn the professional method to keep your structure intact and your silhouette sharp.

Fig. 01 · The Inversion Technique

The secret to a wrinkle-free blazer isn't a miracle steamer—it’s geometry. Most travelers ruin their tailoring by folding it like a t-shirt, which creates harsh lines across the lapels and back panels that no hotel iron can truly erase.

By utilizing the 'shoulder-in-shoulder' method, you maintain the internal structure of the jacket’s canvas. This technique keeps the tension off the fabric and ensures that when you arrive, your blazer is ready to be worn, not repaired.

A blazer’s structure is its soul; treat it with the same respect in your suitcase as you do in your closet.

Step one · 1 minute

The Shoulder Inversion

Hold the blazer by the shoulders, facing away from you. Turn the left shoulder inside out, then tuck the right shoulder into the left one, aligning the shoulder pads perfectly. You are essentially creating a single, compact shoulder unit that preserves the jacket's shape.

Ensure the lining is smooth and not bunched before you begin the inversion.

Step two · 1 minute

Aligning the Lapels

Once the shoulders are nested, lay the jacket flat on a clean surface. Smooth the lapels so they lie naturally against the chest. Because the shoulders are inverted, the lapels should naturally fall into a flat, tension-free position.

Don't force the lapels; let gravity do the work.

Step three · 1 minute

The Vertical Fold

Fold the jacket in half vertically, bringing the side seams together. Ensure the sleeves are tucked neatly inside the folded body of the jacket. The goal is to create a sleek, rectangular package that fits the width of your carry-on.

Avoid folding the sleeves over the back; keep them contained within the fold.

Step four · 1 minute

The Horizontal Half-Fold

Gently fold the blazer horizontally one time. Do not crease it sharply; instead, place a soft item—like a silk scarf or a thin sweater—in the fold to act as a buffer. This prevents a permanent line from forming across the mid-section.

If your suitcase is small, leave the blazer as a long rectangle rather than folding it in half.

The Packing Placement

Place the blazer at the very top of your suitcase. Never pack it at the bottom, as the weight of your other items will compress the fibers and create deep-set wrinkles. If possible, lay it flat across the top of your packed items.

If you are using a garment bag, hang it immediately upon arrival to let the fibers relax.

How to know it works.

When you unpack, the jacket should hold its shape immediately. If you see light compression lines, they will dissipate within 15 minutes of hanging.

Questions at the mirror.

What if my jacket is linen?

Linen will always wrinkle; embrace the natural texture or carry it in a dedicated garment bag.

Can I use a dry cleaner bag?

Yes, placing the folded blazer inside a plastic dry cleaner bag reduces friction and prevents wrinkles during transit.
