How to Wash and Care for Cotton Clothing
Cotton is durable and forgiving, but a few deliberate steps keep your basics looking crisp and feeling soft for years. Here's exactly how to treat your most-worn pieces.
5 min read · IrisCotton is the backbone of a functional wardrobe—t-shirts, button-ups, basics that you reach for constantly. Because you wear these pieces so often, how you wash them directly affects how long they last and how they feel against your skin.
The good news: cotton doesn't require special treatment. What it does require is consistency. A few intentional habits—sorting by color, choosing the right water temperature, and drying strategically—will keep your cotton looking fresh and prevent the common problems that make basics feel tired.
Cotton shrinks most in the first wash, so don't panic if your favorite tee feels slightly smaller after one cycle.
What you'll need.
- 01Washing machine
- 02Laundry detergent (liquid or powder)
- 03Clothesline or drying rack
- 04White vinegar (optional, for rinse)
- 05Flat drying surface or clean towel
- 06Dryer (optional, low heat only)
Step one · 1 minute
Sort by color and fabric weight
Separate whites, lights, and darks into three piles. This prevents dye transfer and allows you to tailor water temperature to each load. Within each color group, keep heavyweight items (jeans, towels) separate from lightweight pieces (t-shirts, underwear) so delicate items don't get beaten around in the wash cycle. Check all pockets and turn graphic tees inside out to protect prints.
New dark cotton pieces should be washed alone for the first two cycles to release excess dye.
Step two · 2 minutes
Choose water temperature based on color
Wash whites and lights in warm water (90–110°F) to remove soil and bacteria. Use cold water for darks and colors to prevent fading and shrinkage. Cold water is equally effective at cleaning modern detergents and is gentler on fibers. Fill your machine to about three-quarters capacity—overcrowding prevents proper rinsing and leaves detergent residue that dulls cotton over time.
If a garment has visible stains, pre-treat with a small amount of detergent and let it sit for 15 minutes before washing.
Step three · 1 minute
Use the right amount of detergent
More detergent does not mean cleaner clothes. Follow the manufacturer's dosing guidelines based on load size and soil level. Excess detergent leaves a waxy buildup that traps moisture and makes cotton feel stiff. For regular loads, use half the recommended amount—modern detergents are concentrated and highly effective. Liquid detergent dissolves better in cold water than powder.
If your water is hard, add a water softener or vinegar rinse to boost detergent performance without increasing soap volume.
Step four · 2 minutes
Select a gentle or normal cycle
Use a normal cycle for everyday basics like t-shirts and casual button-ups. Reserve delicate cycles for thinner fabrics or items with embellishments. A normal cycle with cold water is sufficient for most cotton pieces and won't damage fibers. Avoid hot water unless dealing with heavily soiled whites, as heat accelerates fading and can cause permanent shrinkage beyond the initial 3–5% loss.
If your machine has a soak option, use it for whites that need brightening—30 minutes in cool water with detergent works better than bleach.
Step five · 3 minutes
Dry strategically to prevent shrinkage
Air-dry whenever possible. Hang or lay flat on a clean surface to preserve shape and eliminate shrinkage risk. If you must use a dryer, remove items while slightly damp and lay them flat to finish drying naturally. If you dry completely in the machine, use low heat and remove items immediately to prevent wrinkles and additional shrinkage. Tumble drying on high heat is the fastest way to shorten the life of cotton basics.
For fitted t-shirts and items prone to stretching, lay flat to dry on a clean towel. Reshape the neckline and shoulders while damp.
Step six · 1 minute
Fold and store properly
Once dry, fold cotton pieces immediately to prevent wrinkles from setting. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, which fades colors over time. Avoid hanging lightweight cotton basics like t-shirts—gravity stretches the neckline and shoulders. Use shelf space or drawers instead. For long-term storage, fold pieces loosely and place acid-free tissue between layers to prevent creasing.
If a piece wrinkles after storage, a light steam or cool iron on the cotton setting will restore it without damaging fibers.
How to know your cotton care routine is working
Well-cared-for cotton should feel soft, hold its original shape, and show no fading or pilling after multiple washes. Colors remain vibrant, necklines stay intact, and seams hold firm. If your basics feel stiff, look dull, or shrink unexpectedly, adjust your water temperature, detergent amount, or drying method.
Questions at the mirror.
My cotton t-shirt shrank after the first wash. Can I fix it?
Slight shrinkage (3–5%) is normal and permanent. If the garment is unwearable, try gently stretching it while damp and laying it flat to dry. For future purchases, check the fabric content and care label—100% cotton shrinks more than cotton blends. Pre-shrunk cotton will minimize this issue.
Why does my white cotton feel stiff and dingy?
Excess detergent buildup is the most common culprit. Wash your whites with half the recommended detergent amount and add a vinegar rinse (1/2 cup white vinegar in the rinse cycle) to remove residue. This also brightens whites naturally without bleach.
How often should I wash cotton basics?
Wash t-shirts and casual pieces after 2–3 wears unless visibly soiled or sweaty. Button-up shirts can go 3–4 wears before washing. Underwear and socks should be washed after each wear. Less frequent washing extends garment life and reduces fading.
Is bleach safe for all cotton?
Chlorine bleach should only be used on white, colorfast cotton. It weakens fibers over time and yellows whites if overused. For brightening, try oxygen-based bleach or a vinegar rinse instead. Always dilute bleach and follow the product instructions.
