The Art of Preserving Your Cashmere
Cashmere is not as fragile as the dry-cleaning lobby wants you to believe. With the right technique, you can maintain its loft and softness at home.
5 min read · IrisThe secret to a sweater that lasts a decade isn’t a high-end dry cleaner; it’s the abandonment of harsh chemicals and heat. Cashmere is a natural hair fiber that thrives on moisture and gentle handling, yet it is often ruined by the very machines meant to clean it.
Treating your knitwear as an investment rather than a disposable weekend layer requires a shift in routine. By following these steps, you will prevent the dreaded felting process and maintain the structural integrity of your favorite pieces.
Cashmere is a natural fiber; treat it like your own hair, not like a piece of upholstery.
De-pilling · 2 minutes
The Gentle Groom
Pilling is a natural consequence of friction, not a sign of poor quality. Lay your sweater flat on a hard surface and use a cashmere comb or a fabric shaver with a light touch. Work in one direction to remove surface knots without pulling at the structural weave of the garment.
Never pull pilling off by hand, as this stretches the fiber and creates more knots.
Soaking · 3 minutes
The Cold Bath
Fill a clean basin with cool water and a teaspoon of wool-specific detergent. Submerge the sweater completely, ensuring the water saturates the fibers. Let it soak for 15 minutes to allow the soap to lift oils and debris from the yarn without agitation.
Avoid standard laundry detergents, as their enzymes can break down natural proteins.
Rinsing · 2 minutes
The Gentle Rinse
Drain the soapy water and refill the basin with fresh, cool water. Gently press the sweater against the side of the basin to release the suds; do not wring or twist the fabric. Repeat this until the water runs clear and no soap residue remains.
If the water is sudsy, keep rinsing—soap left in the fiber will attract dust.
Drying · 2 minutes
The Towel Roll
Lay a clean, dry towel flat and place the wet sweater on top. Roll the towel up like a sleeping bag to absorb the excess moisture from the knit. Unroll after a few minutes; the sweater should be damp but not dripping.
Never hang a wet cashmere sweater, as the weight of the water will permanently distort the shape.
Blocking · 1 minute
The Final Shape
Lay the sweater flat on a drying rack or a fresh, dry towel away from direct sunlight or heat sources. Gently reshape the garment to its original dimensions, ensuring sleeves and hems are aligned. Allow it to air dry completely for 24 hours.
Direct heat from radiators will make the fibers brittle and prone to breakage.
How to know it works.
Your cashmere should feel soft, not waxy or stiff. If it feels heavy or sticky, you haven't rinsed enough soap out.
Questions at the mirror.
Can I use the delicate cycle on my machine?
Only if your machine has a dedicated 'hand wash' mode and you use a mesh laundry bag. However, hand washing is always safer.
How often should I wash it?
Every 3-4 wears is sufficient. Frequent washing strips the natural oils that keep the fiber supple.
