Measure your shoulders, chest, and inseam
Use a soft measuring tape (or a piece of string marked at intervals). For shoulders, measure across the back from shoulder point to shoulder point while wearing a fitted shirt. For chest, measure around the fullest part while relaxed (not flexed). For inseam, measure from your inner thigh to the top of your shoe while standing barefoot. Write these down. These three numbers are your baseline for every basic piece you buy.
Have someone else take measurements if possible—it's more accurate than measuring yourself.

Identify your fit priorities
Do your shoulders feel tight in most shirts? That's your primary constraint. Do sleeves always bunch at your wrists? Length is your issue. Do jeans gap at the waist? Don't buy a five-pack of white t-shirts yet. Buy one crew-neck t-shirt in your measured size from a brand known for consistency (check reviews for fit feedback). Buy one pair of jeans in your inseam length. Buy one button-up oxford in your shoulder measurement. Wear each for a full day. Does the t-shirt pull across the chest? Do the jeans stack or gap? Does the shirt collar sit right? Only after these pass do you repeat.

Verify fit against your body, not the mirror alone
Sit down in the test pieces. Raise your arms. Bend forward. A shirt that fits standing still might pull across the back when you move. Jeans that look right might restrict your stride. Spend five minutes in real movement. If anything tugs, restricts, or gaps, it's not your baseline—try the next size or brand. Your basics need to work for your actual life, not just a photo.
The armhole should sit at your natural shoulder point. If it's too low or too high, the whole piece will feel wrong.

Build your core five in that fit
Once you've found your fit, buy: two plain crew-neck t-shirts (one white, one neutral), one oxford button-up (white or light blue), one pair of jeans (dark or medium), and one plain crewneck sweater. These five pieces combine into dozens of outfits. Don't add a sixth until you've worn these five at least ten times each. Repetition is how you learn what actually works.
Resist the urge to add 'variety' too soon. Basics are boring on purpose. That's the point.

Document your fit wins
Screenshot the product pages of pieces that fit. Note the brand, the size you bought, and any fit notes (e.g., 'runs small in shoulders'). Keep this list on your phone. When you need to replace a t-shirt or add a new basic, you have a reference. This saves you from the endless cycle of trying sizes and returning things.
Include a photo of yourself in the fitted piece if you can. Visual memory is stronger than written notes.
